Description
Shanghai Ad Color poster from the 1920s with an elegantly dressed woman seated on a leopard skin throw with an abstract crescent moon design in the background. From a series of ads for the luxury brand Hataman Cigarettes, designed and printed in Shanghai for the British American Tobacco Company (BAT).

These posters were a synthesis of Chinese illustration techniques and Western art styles, heavily influenced by Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Artist
The artist may be Hu Boxiang (1896-1989) who was trained in western art and employed by the BAT to produce images such as this. (signature seal found underneath the leopard’s tail and the woman’s right foot)
